Embedding Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Higher Education Curriculum and Research Clusters

On May 31, 2024 , Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) convened its annual Teaching, Learning, and Research Symposium. This year’s assembly explored the critical theme: "Embedding Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Higher Education Curriculum and Research Clusters".

The event provided a high-level academic platform for educators, researchers, and experts to examine innovative strategies and challenges related to integrating sustainability into the academic fabric of higher education.

Strategic Vision and Keynote Insights

The symposium opened with a welcome address by Dr. Komiljon Karimov, WIUT Rector. The proceedings were designed to offer a collaborative nexus for sharing transformative practices that advance the university's strategic priorities in teaching, learning, and assessment. The program focused on how institutional policies and pedagogical shifts can foster global citizenship and professional responsibility in a rapidly changing world.

Thematic Exploration: Sustainability, Pedagogy, and Innovation

The 2024 program showcased diverse research areas through a series of expert presentations:

Curriculum & Assessment Design: Nargiza Alimukhamedova and Iroda Komilova discussed building constructive alignment between SDGs and the community , while Timur Perkov and Ulugbek Islamov examined embedding SDGs into the assessment of business modules.

Professional Identity and Skills: Nodira Isamuxamedova and Kholida Begmatova presented on integrating SDG Goal 8 into the Developing Professional Identity (DPI) module. Zamira Ataniyazova and Prabha Kiran explored "green skills" within the context of Business Management in Uzbekistan.

Technology and Future Readiness: Gunjan Jain addressed the intersection of technology and sustainability in the session, "Nurturing 'S.M.A.R.T.' Learners for Sustainable Future: Revolutionizing Education with Artificial Intelligence".

Student Empowerment and Specialized Education: Nozima Tokhirova highlighted the student's role in the path toward a sustainable university , while Tamilla Tagieva investigated the integration of SDGs specifically within legal education.

Professional Excellence and Global Recognition

Continuing the university's tradition of rewarding academic excellence, the best presenter from this symposium earned the prestigious opportunity to represent Uzbekistan and showcase their work at the University of Westminster’s Learning & Teaching Symposium in London in September 2024. The event concluded with remarks from Dr. Michael Clarke, First Deputy Rector (Academic), marking another milestone in WIUT’s commitment to shaping a sustainable future through higher education.

The first place was awarded to Tamilla Tagieva, Zamira Ataniyazova second place and Timur Perkov is third place for their contribution on symposium.
