About the Course

The WIUT Preparatory Language Course for Master's degree is designed to enable you to consolidate, build on, and advance your English proficiency in the context of Level 7 academic study. This course offers an opportunity to help you succeed, whether that is to meet entry requirements or if you are looking to enhance your academic literacy and discipline-specific knowledge in advance of starting your degree. During the course, we will concentrate on developing the essential language, literacy, and study skills needed for academic life in WIUT's multilingual and multicultural learning environment. We will employ practice-focused and research-informed approaches, which will incorporate a combination of face-to-face practical classes and workshops, as well as online independent study. We aim to equip you with a solid foundation in using Academic English orally and in writing. You will gain the necessary knowledge and experience – including critical reading, digital literacy, active listening, academic writing conventions, source integration, and presentation skills – to meet the demands of university study independently and responsibly. Where possible, you will be working on materials that relate to your intended field of study.

Course Content and Aims

Our goal is to provide you with a solid foundation for your university studies and to equip you with the language and study skills necessary for your degree. Thus, the aim of the course is to develop and improve your skills and abilities in:

Applying advanced critical reading strategies to analyze, evaluate, and interpret complex academic texts, enabling the identification of underlying arguments, assumptions, and evidence.

Employing comprehensive digital literacy skills to effectively locate, critically assess, systematically manage, and clearly communicate scholarly information across various digital platforms.

Demonstrating proficient active listening and sophisticated note-taking skills to accurately interpret, summarize, and synthesize key information and nuanced viewpoints from spoken academic sources such as lectures, seminars, and academic discussions.

Articulating facts, viewpoints, and complex arguments clearly and coherently, utilizing precise, discipline-specific vocabulary and adhering rigorously to the conventions and stylistic features characteristic of academic writing at the postgraduate level.

Critically integrating credible and authoritative sources to support arguments and insights, effectively demonstrating mastery of referencing and citation practices both orally and in written academic discourse.

Exhibiting proficient presentation skills by confidently and persuasively delivering structured and coherent presentations tailored specifically to academic and professional contexts relevant to their respective fields of study.

You will receive extensive guidance and feedback at every stage of the writing and research process. Student autonomy is encouraged and developed, allowing learners to work independently using materials accessed through the WIUT LMS (the platform where learning materials are stored).

Entry Requirements

A minimum overall IELTS score of 5.5, with no less than 5.5 in the writing component.

Note: Results of the course are valid for entry to postgraduate courses (WIUT master’s programmes) in the 2026-2027 academic year.

Course assessment

You will complete the following assessments during the pre-sessional:

Formative Assessments

You will receive formative assessments and detailed feedback throughout the course duration. These formative assessments will serve as a guideline for you and your teachers in predicting your final grade in the course and in giving you guidance in the areas you need to improve.

You will be expected to work independently to interpret the feedback and address your problems. You will have regular tutorials with your teachers to look at the areas you need to improve to pass this course successfully.

Final Assessments

The final assessment will take place in the final week of the course. You will complete assessments in the following four components: Reading & Listening, Speaking, and Writing. You will receive a mark for each one of the components and a single overall grade for the pre-sessional, which can be used for entry into your chosen degree course.
