This course is designed to enable you to consolidate, build on, and advance your English proficiency in the context of Level 7 academic study. This course offers an opportunity to help you succeed- whether you meet entry requirements or are looking to enhance your academic literacy and discipline-specific knowledge before starting your degree.

During the course, we will concentrate on developing the essential language, literacy, and study skills that needed for academic life in WIUT's multilingual and multicultural learning environment. We will use practice-focused and research-informed approaches, including a combination of face-to-face practical classes, workshops, and online independent study. We aim to equip you with a solid foundation in using Academic English orally and in writing skills. You will gain the necessary knowledge and experience critical reading, digital literacy, active listening, academic writing conventions, source integration, and presentation skills -to meet the demands of university study independently and responsibly. Where possible, you will work on materials related to your intended field of study.

Course aims

We aim to provide you with a solid foundation for your university studies and to give you the language and study skills needed for your degree. By the end of the course, you will be able to:
• Read with a large degree of independence
• Apply critical thinking strategies
• Demonstrate the ability to follow extended spoken input and take structured notes
• Produce clear, detailed academic texts (e.g. essays and reports)
• Demonstrate spoken production skills relevant to their field

Course team

Alim Asanov, Course Leader. Alim Asanov is a lecturer of Academic English module at WIUT, Uzbekistan. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Westminster. His teaching areas include EAP, ESP, TEFL, and test preparation for IELTS and SAT. His research interests focus on teacher education, assessment in higher education, classroom management, and corpus-based language teaching.

Dr. Liliya Makovskaya, Course Teacher. Liliya Makovskaya is a senior lecturer in the Global Education Department of Westminster International University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. She has experience in teacher training and material design in international projects. Her research interests lie in assessment, second language writing, feedback, academic vocabulary, discourse analysis, and higher education.

Iroda Saydazimova, Course Teacher. Iroda Saydazimova is a lecturer of Academic English module at Westminster International University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. She is also involved in delivering teacher training seminars and projects. Her current professional and research interests focus on language instruction, CALL, testing and assessment and academic writing.

Upon successfully completing the course (e.g., passing the final examination), applicants will be eligible to begin their postgraduate studies without needing to retake the IELTS or any other standardized tests required for admission at postgraduate level.
